Common Ground Park
Client: City of Lakeland
Architect: Furr & Wegman Architects
Area: 10 Acre Site
CommonGround Park is Polk County's first "inclusive play experience," a term used to describe non-traditional play areas. Here, children of varying abilities and disabilities are able to play together side-by-side. The park is designed in the shape of a butterfly, and includes many colorful custom-made features such as Gopher Mountain and Adventure Canyon. There are large, spacious tunnels which make it easy for kids in wheelchairs to get through. There are also flat ramps to access play equipment, and other ways for children to make it up Gopher Mountain so they can roll down a hill. Also included was lush Florida Friendly landscaping, water falls, custom rock features, a covered pavilion and restroom structure.
